The Willie Mitchell Classic is thrilled to announce the first recipients of aid from the inaugural Willie Mitchell Classic, which was held in July 2004: Colin Minihan (Port McNeill), Sara Grant (Port McNeill) and Amanda McGill (Port Hardy).

These outstanding young adults from the North Island have shown they are dedicated and driven to making their particular dreams come true and we are excited to be able to help them realize their goals and dreams.

These deserving youths are the first of many to receive assistance achieving their goals and dreams. The Willie Mitchell Classic is always taking applications from youth in the North Island. For more information in how to apply, please follow the link Recommending a Recipient.

Colin Minihan

Colin Minihan, a nineteen year old aspiring filmmaker from Port McNeill, has shown commendable drive and determination in pursuit of his goal. Colin is an accomplished videographer with years of filmmaking under his belt. He has created public service announcements, music videos, short films, as well as a feature length film. His accolades include Best Young Videomaker Award from Videomaker magazine, Best Music Video and Best Public Service Announcement at the BC student film festival and Best Cinematography at the Mini DV festival.

He started his company Digital Interference in Janurary 2005, making a name for himself within the industry as an up and coming talent. Through his company he has created videos for many up and coming music artists. Unfortunately Colin was without equipment of his own, and was beginning to limit the jobs he was able to take as rental equipment is a enormous expense. The Willie Mitchell Classic is proud to be a part of this young filmmaker’s career and has awarded Colin with a Panasonic HD video camera.

Amanda McGill & Sara Grant

Also chosen were two talented North Island figure skaters, thirteen year old Amanda McGill from Port Hardy and eleven year old Sara Grant of Port McNeill. Both skaters have been selected by Skate Canada to be members of the BC/YT Section-Region Select Team after being identified by Skate Canada as two of the region's young talented skaters. It is an honour to be a part of this regional select team as it is comprised of skaters who have the potential to be successful competitive skaters in the eyes of Skate Canada.

As a part of the team, the girls are required to attend a series of camps and competitions, so the Willie Mitchell Classic has awarded each girl $1000 to use toward skate-related expenses. Congratulations to each of these hard working, talented skaters.
